Comments:Hi, Appreciate your efforts...but what's this "honorary" Air Assault Badge for Vietnam vets. I attended the SERTS at Camp Evans and then flew 500 hours in the 2/17 Air Cav in UH-1H's doing the MISSION!!! So now I want an "honorary" Air assault Badge...I think not. I saw Eagle 6's comments...so just change the AR and let's get the men who really earned the Badge the right to wear it. This is too simple a concept not to be realized. I was in the 101st for 10 years and flew missions for the Air Assault School...I never attended it because I knew I was already qualified.

Comments:I am in total support of your efforts to have the Air Assault Badge awarded to those who meet the requirments you set forth from the start. I have a copy of my award for the door gunner crewman wings and think I should also be awarded the Badge. It never got on my DD214 and feel lucky to have these orders to prove I did get them. I also talked with Lt General Graham a former Airborne, Ranger, Infantry, Special Forces, and yes he has the early Air Assault Bagde and he is giving you his support also. He also did four tours in VN. He is Commanding General with the United States National Defense Service Corps. I am Lt. General H.C.Birdwell, Commandant with the USAVHSSC. Comments:This is my 2nd time to respond. I have a copy of the orders awarding me crew member wing for 16 missions as a door gunner against a hostile force in VN would I qualify for Air assault bage?? I would think so. I jump out of that Helicopter a few times myself to help others. But, I did not go to a school. I think that it would have to be awarded to all helicopter units that made missions around VN. I would think that would be air assault.

Comments:101st Airborne DIVARTY RVN, '68 to '69. My unit, B Btry, 2/11th FA, always moved by air except for one occasion during my time in-country. We made a road march from Sally to Jack in Oct. '68, when we took over the 1st CAV's AO. I preferred the CH-54's to move our 155's over the 5 ton prime mover. In terms of rigging loads, backhauling material, landing helicopters, our guys were as expert as any who attended a formal air assault school. We learned OJT, like everyone else in the 101st. Only lost a load one time (net load carried by a Chinook. What a great report of survey. Enough material to fill a batallion of Chinooks!

Comments:Saw the story in feb. issue of Vietnam magazine, keep up the fight for this award. its not that we deserve this, we earned this many times over. Did two tours in Vietnam serving with B1/35 25th Inf Div, B1/506 101st Airborne, HHC 1/508th recon/lrp 82nd Airborne. I remember back then that we were to be awarded the Air Assault Badge but never saw it happen. I often wondered later on what ever happened on the medal/badge issue. Comments:I was the Artillery Forward Observer with C 1/7th Cav from 9/66 to 4/67, Crowsfoot, Bong Son, An lao Valley. I received the Bronze Star and the Air Medal. Of course I did not receive the CIB because I was Artillery but I humped those mountains and flew those air assaults just the same and thought myself more of a grunt than a cannon cocker. I suppose a new badge is ok and I hope you get it, but to me, the Air Medal is tops. Garry Owen.

Comments:I know that during a period of time, the air medal was not authorized for Inf. soldiers. Why I do not know. If you can go to the army regulation on awards, it shows the dates and who qualify for the award. I would guess that about a fourth of the soldiers who have the air medal with order are not valid. I don't understand how one year it is authorized, the next it is not and then the next year it is. I really think that company & sqdn commanders just did not want grunts to have these awards. I believe that considered them only for pilots and crews. It is hard to understand how tight in VN they were for award, but now high awards are being given out for just being there. Examp. soldier & his dog received bronze star for dog smelling explosive in vehicle & Purple Heart for another soldier breaking leg in cave w/no combat at the time.

Seems to me that folks who served in an Air Mobile Division, had an Infantry MOS, and were awarded the CIB and Air Medal during their tour(s) in VN, should be eligible for the Air Assault badge regardless of whether or not they attended a "formal" Air Assault school. Comments: Served with A/2/506/101 abn 11/67 to 7/68. Many never received Air Medals at that time since the word was you needed tail number of chopper. Do remember battalion and div headquarters staff received more medals than entire company after tet and 1st lt Darnell,company co refused to go to medal event untill directly ordered by 3rd brg col. Staff received air medals since they usually flew in the same chopper. Combat air assault ojt is the school of hard knocks which is the ultimate training method !!

Comments:Thanks to all Air Assualt Grunts fighting another battle for deserved recognition. I served with the 9th Infantry and 25th Infantry in Vietnam. Did numerous air assualts. Frustrating to see many noncombat GIs wearing the AAB. Received the CIB, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal and VN Service Medals. It appears that the Army has turned the AAB--a badge of honor--honed in combat---to a one week training exercise. In Az I have seen the AAB worn by VN Veterans with the words "Combat Earned" printed across it. A way to vent their anger with the Army in not making the award of the AAB retroactive. This evening I have written letters to all the AZ Congressional delegation regarding this issue. Hang in there--we will get this done for us and for our brothers that gave it up in VN.

Comments:In response to Mike McGhie's comments. Hey Mike, I don't understand why it appears that you are so bothered by the efforts to be consistant in the awarding of the air assault wings. All other badges like this, jump wings, rigger wings, glider wings, can earned by combat performance. The EIB is more like a marksman badge. I find it interesting that the 101st originally tried to deal with it as an exclusive award for the 101st only, but has since had to allow it to be available for all to attain. I'm not some wannabe, as you seemed to imply, i just feel that if this award symbolizes recognition of a skill that I demonstrated and performed under combat conditions, I have earned it. The air medal was dealt with differently throughout Vietnam. In 1966/67 we received 1 award regardless how many combat assaults we did. I continually read about numerous oak leafs being awarded to others in later years. I guess criterea changed, but 1 was enough for me. I'm sorry that you are so bothered by t

Comments:WOW, I've read all the comments posted here and there are so many opinions pro and con. This Combat Assault Badge is NOT what everyone thinks it is. It is an award that designates you completed the Army's Air Assault Training. If it is to be ammended to include in-country training many of us received then one would have to show proof of this and that (may be impossible) The Air Medal was awarded to infantrymen and others who performed multiple combat assaults. There is no need to add another medal unless you just want to pad your medal case. Every Veterans Day in D.C. you can see hundreds of Wannabees wearing the CAB along with dozens of other medals. Is that what you want? I'd like to know who's running this web site and how much money they're making selling these unauthorized badges to every wannabee on the web. Comments:I want you all to know that my comments on the Air Assault Badge were just Army facts and not my personal point of view. I think any of us who were truly Airmobile would like to have the badge but it really has nothing to do with War, just training for war. The 11th Air assault (experemental) was the only unit given the award (before they became 1st Cav and shipped to Vietnam) until after the war was over and Air Assault training resumed. I think many are confusing it with a C.I.B. type of award istead of a E.I.B. which it is more like. Thanks

Comments:The air assault badge is issued to any soldier who completes Air Assault training, same as Jump Wings are issued after schooling. It is not an airmobile badge or combat related badge. Furthermore, it cannot be legally issued by the Army to only one Airmobile Division or Unit in Vietnam. If it's not on the DD214 or DD215 you can not wear it, period.

Comments: I was in B co.4th Bn, 47th Infantry, 9th Div 11/67-11/68 as part of the Mobile Riverine Force in the Mekong Delta. I got an air medal for 40+ missions. I was in 5 or 6 hot LZs including the hottest one of the war on 18 Mar 68. They dropped us in front of a full strength hardcore battalion and 8 of the 10 slicks and both gunships went down in a matter of seconds. Also prior to going over I had a week of air assault training including rappeling with the 5th Division at Ft Carson. I deserve a badge. Still a grunt in the reserve, just got called up, reporting in 3 Jan 03.

Comments:I have read your recent article in Vietnam Magazine with some interest as well as some of the comments made in your website's guest book. In your article you made some compelling arguments for the award of the Air Assault badge. However, I think you also need to point out that the 101st Airborne Division was an Airborne Division until July 1968 when it was designated the 101st Air Cavalry and then approximately one month later redesignated the 101st Airborne Division(Airmobile). The reasons are varied for this switch but the end result was that the Division retained the title Airborne although in name only. How will you approach this period when men were proud airborne troopers with the 1st Brigade(Seperate) and then with the Division that learned and conducted airmobile tactics? Why are all other Vietnam combat veterans excluded from the air assault badge when they also participated in airmobile operations? No, my friend we all should be in the mix. Comments:Was a member of Co A, 1st Bn (Abn), 187th Infantry, 11th Air Assault Div (Test), upon my return from the 173rd Abn Bde on Okinawa Christmas 1964. Was awarded the 11th Air Assault Division's badge upon completion of mandatory rappelling from the towers and from the Hueys. Distinctly remember the pucker factor being elevated because my short legs would not reach the skid onthe UH-1....panic....my thought at the time was I'd rather be parachuting from a C-119! The 1st Cav (with which I deployed) made many, many air assaults in Nam, and I would think that Generals Kinnard (God bless him) or Westie would get behind this effort with regards to the current Army Chief and stop the B.S. I retired after 23 years service and frequently have speaking engagements on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. I wear my Air Assault Badge on my uniform authorized or not and I would like to see someone try to take it off or make a degrading remark about it! I hope the badge is eventually approved for wear. I was an Artillery FO with a Light Infantry maneuver company in 1970 (the 198th LIB / Americal Division). We were not an airmobile unit, but we rode choppers (Huey slicks) on what we referred to then as "Combat Assaults" (and later "Search and Clears"). The number of helicopter insertions that I participated in during the 4 months I was attached to the Infantry that stuck in my head all these years was 17. Personally, I was lucky enough to not have gone into one hot LZ; and only one hot PZ. Of course, we never knew what awaited us, and as far as we were concerned, every time we boarded the choppers, we were going to war. Are guys like the brave grunts I supported, and me and my RTO and Recon. Sgt. also guys you are speaking for, or do we fall outside some parameter. Comments:It is nice to read that the 101st is going to finally recognize the experience of the Vietnam vets with a certificate and retroactive authorization, but what a shame all of the other vets are going to be slighted. If the 101st has total control over this issue, why are they only going to recognize 101st vets? I served with the 1st air cav in 66/67, was trained in-country, made many combat air assaults, awarded CIB. air medal, and can document these facts. Why shouldn't I be able to apply for a certificate and authorization for the air assault badge along with the 101st vets? Comments:Thank you for your efforts. Mr Allen is right, Vietnam Veterans have had to fight for virtually everything they have gotten. I was with the Recondo Platoon, 2/502nd, 1st BDE (S), 66 & 67. I still the remember those nights of bailing out of a HUEY traveling accross an LZ at about 15 MPH and about 5 feet off the gournd, while taking green tracer rounds. Not to mention the fact thtat the elephant grass was 8 feet tall so your fall to the ground was more like 13 feet! Or climbing down a rope ladder hagning off the back end of a CH-47 "Shithook" and getting sea sick! I seem to remember the "good old days". Rappeling was the oooonly way to go, if you couldn't jump! Comments:I was in Co. A 1/502 Inf. 101st Airborne (Airmobile) the last 5 months that the 101st was in Vietnam. I was RTO for the "Flag" unit. The C.O., Capt. K.C. Scull promoted me to Sp4 in 11B20 MOS to try to get a CIB for me. It didn't happen- don't know why. We did what I waas told were Combat Assaults around FSB Arsenal and in the piedmont. Got an Army Commendation mdl. near the end of my tour. That was enough for me at the time. Anything more would be very nice.

Comments:As a former member of the 101st ABN D co 2/501 68-69 I made several air assaults while with that unit without any air assault training because we were air mobile. Which meant we did air assaults into a hot LZ without training. We were doing on the job training with out any questions asked. I think it's a slap in the face again for all vets who deserve this badge to be told that they don't deserve it because they didn't take the training for it when in fact we did air assault with out any kind of training while in viet nam. I say hell no for any honorary certifiate on paper. We deserve the recognition for which we fought for and we deserve the real deal the air assault badge. One more thing I would like to say is I can't believe that Sen. John McCain won't support this cause for his fellow vets,this sucks.

Comments:I served with RECON 1/506th from nov 68 to nov 69 after spending 9 months with SFTG where I learned to rappel out of hueys. I learned again at recondo school, Our platoon taught rappelling to the entire Bn during a stand down at Evans in June 69. I personally rapelled into the A Shau at least 15 times, usually the first guy off the skid, and we got very,very good at it. I even earned two (whoopie-do!)air medals. My recon team and I rapelled into COMBAT, wearing muddy, stinking, ripped camouflaged fatigues and a full load of ammo (we worked out of dirty firebases, not basecamps like the rangers) If that is not good enough to earn an air assault badge, then the spitshined REMFs can kiss my great white bottom! AIRBORNE!!!!!!!

Air Assault Company in 1965-66.I recall that Bell Technicians came to Vinh Long to take note of what we were doing w/arming and usage of weapons on the UH-'B'and later on the 'C' models. Comments:I served with 3/506th 101st Airborne (AirMobile) 1970 WIA. I have heard back from one Senator - Joseph Nighthorse Campbell - and I wrote both senators and my congressmen. Said senator stated he is looking into this. The 506th Airborne Infantry Association http://currahee.hispeed.com/ is in the procees of gathering sympathetic congressmen and the personal attention of the current and pass 101st commanding generals, serious progress is being made. Perhaps the web master here can syncopate his efforts with their's. Contacts would be Gene Overton and Bruce Moore and address information for them is on the 506th web site. Comments:The 1st cav pioneered the use of air asault in the 60's but we were never authorized the assault badge. As company clerk I made sure each of my company's troopers received the Air Medal, but an air assault badge was definitely deserved.

I am now with the 2/127th National Guard newly changed to "light" Infantry, Air Assualt. Maybe at fifty I can get what I earned in Vietnam thirty years ago.

Comments:Served as rifleman with B-1-7th, 1st Cav, 1967-1968. We all received Air Medals and CIB's, plus other individual medals. Comments:I appreciate your efforts. I served with A co 2/8 Cav in 66-67. We made close to 50 combat air assaults. We all received Air Medals for these assaults. It would be pretty easy to determine who is eliglble for air assault wings if they really wanted to. My CIB means alot more to me than an EIB anyway. Good luck!
