I made between 25 and fifty air combat assaults with the unit and have Air Medals as proof. Ever since the Air Assault Badge was created I said that we should automatically be awarded it retroactively. I will do anything to get this accomplished. If anyone deserves this badge, it is those of us who havwe served in this capacity.

All you would have to do is to look at the history of the # of combat air assualts made in country, and you will get the ideal of how, where, and to whome the ASB should go to. You noticed i used the words combat air assualt. We who became dopes on a rope in the nam, deserves the badge. Wake up powers that be.

I lost mine and I got out in Jan of 1975 and I can`t seem to find it antwhere. It is not on my DD214 but because I completed the course my First Sarge of the 2/327th inf Bravo Co. made me a deal that if I passed the class I would get my pfc rank back. It (DD214) shows the rank up grade but not mycompleteing the class. Any help to get this put on my DD214 would be very helpful to me. If ta know please e-mail me and letme know so I can get a copy of my Graduation cert. Thanks Bros! NO SLACK! Michael R. Allen

1st Cav Div (Airmobile) -- Oct 67 - Oct 68; An Khe, Phu Bai, Hue, Camp Evans, etc. I have a fine copy of the "original air assault" badge that, although it is unauthorized, wear with pride because it represents to me the foundation of air assault/mobile operations that were developed within the hastile war zone of Vietnam and in many cases are still in use in today's military. It's just another slap in the face for the many of us who served our country with pride during the Vietnam conflict. Even if approved I would never wear the new badge because it does not represent the effort made by the original air assault/air mobile soldiers.

I feel that having been a member of the 1st Cav in Vietnam, and especially after Tet 68, that anyone who was assigned to the 1st Cav, 101st, and any other air mobile or air assault unit during the Vietnam War should be awarded the badge that was originally awarded to the 11th Air Assault. The present award was created after the war and is dependent upon the completion of the air assault school, and not so much for service in a war zone; whereas the original version would show that it was awarded for service in the Vietnam War zone for service in one of the units who helped create air mobile/assault procedures and traditions. Any thing less would be a slap in the face of all Vietnam vets who served in these units, during the development faze.

Made several air assualts with C&D companies.Made lots of flights with chopper pilots some to replace wounded or hurt medics in field go out and work wrecks on QL1.Even had the previlage of toten the radio and carring ammo for the 60 gunner when we were short of men.We all did what we had to do to make it thru our tour.I remember the sarge handing a cherry the thump gun and said your a Grenadier as of right now with out any training.Anyone who was there knows what they deserve and they have a right to it.I repelled out of Hueys and climbed down ladders out of the back of schinooksduring a 3 day training period at camp eagle but I don't have it on my DD214.If they want to give it to me I'll damn sure take it and if not I still know what I and a lot of other guys did. They were so young when he died, and it left with with all of these questions from them that I can't, but feel need answering..He took a lot of pictures of Vietnam, but we can't tell much about them or what

Gentlemen, I served two tourw with the 1/9 Cavalry. Our unit is considered the most decorated unit in Vietnam. Among it's accomplishments is the first engagement in the Ia Drang Valley when on Nov. 1st 1965 captured an NVA hospital followed by an night ambush which destroyed a NVA platoon. This was before the 7th Cavalry assault at X-Ray. The following is but a few of the deed the 1/9 is credit for. 50% of the Casualties inflicted on the enemy by the 1st Cavalry Division was done by the 9th Cavalry. It not only started the battles fought by the 1st Cavalry, but is credited with other battles by other divisions, including the Vietnamese, Korean and Marines. Each of the Squadron Troops (A,B,C)made over 300 Air Assault per year for seven years. This does not count the ones made by "D" Troop. I could go on, but you get my point. I am proud to wear the older Air Assault badge even if unauthorized since I am retired. I did over 200 Air Assault while in Vietnam so I wear the badge wit

Hey guys don't feel to bad, I was just a Track Mechanic who served "in the field" most of my tour, with 9th Inf Div and 199th LIB (D Troop). They say I can't get a CIB because I wasn't an 11B10, but I was with the guys in all the firefights, etc. I just had an M16 in one hand and a tool box in the other. I'm sure there are a lot of folks out there that did similar to me and can't get a CIB, Assault Badge or anything like that. As far as I'm concerned, even the Donut Dollies should get'em, they were in the field too! (Just my opinion).

Great site. I served with the 101 1/327th Abu Co. from 65-66. Went over on the boat and did not leave till june of 66. Was a machine gunner for the 3rd platoon and my squad leader called me about a month ago about this medal and reminded me that we had over 30 combat air assualts. Hope we all get what we deserve, but you guys know are govt.

I served as a DG,CC,FE on a Ch-47 and things do fall between the cracks...... For sure any person who goes into LZ's in Combat should be awarded the Combat assult award... If I didn't have the orders awarding me the 2/d thru 9/th airmedals which shows me on flight status from Aug-69-May-70 there would be no way for me to show what I did in Vietnam. This is cause my 201 file only shows me getting to My unit. 147/th Avn.Co.(ASH) & it's filed under the incorect SS# as well. LOL & To top that..... I have found out the "164 th CAG" Oficial Unit History from Nat. Archives, shows that this unit and its attatched CAB's 13 & 307 were awarded the PUC.(Pres Unit Citation) for the 1970 Counter Sanctuary campain in Cambodia. Any of you Helicopter Crewmembers want to HELP on this one.... Did we get it ? Or is the official History wrong.. the DA Pam 672-3 does not list these units as having this award...

Having served with the 1st Cav (Airmobile)Division virtually from one end of RVN to the other via over 325 combat assault notches on my belt from 1969 thru 1971, I admire & support your efforts to recognize those comrads who laid the ground work for today's air assault tactics & procedures---unfortunately in many cases we had to learn things the hard way. Let me know if there's anyway I can help as I kept a lot of data on missions.

The old saying is that there is more than one way up the mountain, and so it is with the man who attains competenence through his own merits. The issue seems to be whether a person demonstrates competence by his actions and experience. Not to take anything away from those who attended an official school, but why is it not equally as valid for those who demostrated proficiency under the most extrememe conditions of actual combat? Is that not what the school prepares one for---the eventuality of the real thing? It seems ludicrous not to recognize those who actually had the hands-on experience and demostrated competency. They passed the ultimate test! After arriving in VN I spent several days in training with the 25th Division's air mobile training for new grunts. Then, during my entire tour air assaults were just par for the course in a time that was the "defining era" for the AIR Mobile Infantryman.

RVN 67-68, FO/RTO C/2/502& Recondo Ptl. C/1/321FA & C/1/320FA, 1/101 ABN DIV Welcome home to all Nam Bro's. It would seem to me, after reviewing the many boilerplate replies from the Army, that to qualify for the AAB, one must complete a course that is little more than a compilation of the techniques hard learned by Boonie Rats and Gun Bunnies all over the Nam. Why there is such resisitance to acknowledging what is self evident and now doctrine in the Army's own Air Assault training course? The AAB should be awarded to all troops that can validate being assigned, as examples, but not limited to an Infantry or Artillery unit. The personel who actually flew and crewed the birds should also be included, ipsofacto. Not such a daunting and undoable effort as one writer claimed. Support out troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and other "hot" places.

I served with the 11th Air Assault Division (Test) from Oct 64 to August 65, then with the 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile) from 65 to 67 in RVN. I was a machine gunner with Co C, 227th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter). We were all awarded the old air assault badge at Benning with the 11th, but as it was a division award, we had to take them off when we became the 1st CD. Would be kind of neat to wear the old badge again since I am still wearing the uniform every day thanks to a long break in service. PJ

Served with 1st Bn(Abn), 12th Cav (66-67). At that time we were awarded the Air Medal for completing 25 CA's. But only one AM was awarded for CA's no matter how many were completed(over 25). We used the Air Assault Badge and Jump Wings on the end of tour plaques issued by the 1/12th. There was a rumor around Ft Bragg in 74 or so that the award of the Air Medal for CA's authorized the wear of the Air Assault Badge. Rumor only.
